Beth is wearing a one-piece zebra print swimsuit and a black knit shawl, standing with her hands on her hips and her black-and-green hair flowing over her right shoulder, smiling at the camera and wearing dark reflective sunglasses. A light blue ocean stretches out to the horizon behind her, gradually darkening as it gets further away into the background.

Meet the Geek Girl

Hi everyone. Nice to e-meet you. I’m Beth, or Geek Girl around these parts. I was born in NY and grew up in Brooklyn until I moved to Texas to finish high school. I’ve always had a love of travel, but didn’t really understand the depths of my wanderlust until I traveled to Russia with a university program when I was 19 years old. That trip changed my life in many ways.

From that point on, I knew two things: I needed to travel as much as I could afford and I needed to do it my way.

(An aside: Around the same time, I embarked on my career in sales. Flash forward to all these years later, and I’m a Vice President of Sales, Marketing, and Business Development for an amazing pop-culture collectibles company based in California.)

Beth standing on a snowy Iceland landscape. She is wearing a long black dress with long black sleeves and a black hood, one hand reaching up to hold the edge of her hood and the other down by her side. Her long green hair flows down from either side of her face most of the way down her torso. She is smiling, her face turned slightly down and to her right, with her eyes slightly closed to show off her lovely eyelashes behind her wide black-rimmed glasses.

I traveled as much as I could. I figured out that there was no book I could buy, no website I could visit that really gave me all the information I wanted while traveling. Yes, there are more “touristed” locales on my bucket lists and itineraries, but it’s truly the off-the-beaten-path gems that I’m most excited about. Those spots you don’t find on every top 10 list. Additionally, photography being a hobby of mine since I was about 5 years old, I always prioritized that perfect photo.

But, there was more than that. I am always on the hunt to find local artists to support. Restaurants focusing on regional cuisine. (All while having lupus and Hashimoto’s Thyroiditis and needing to be on a restrictive diet.) My husband and young daughter also almost always travel with me (and yes, I’ll chat more about adventure traveling with young kiddos). And don’t get me started of travel packing lists that try to tell you that your wardrobe needs to be devoid of character. But I digress.

So I started being my own travel planner. I used every resource available to me. Many websites, books, blogs, befriended locals wherever I was traveling, and traveled my way. Since that momentous moment when I was 19 years old, I’ve traveled to 5 continents and have a trip scheduled for my 6th in 2021. My goal is to drink in as much of this world I can and share everything I find with anyone who wants to come along for the ride. Thanks for joining me!
