Having now gone on safari in South Africa and Zimbabwe, I’ve refined a clothing packing list that ensures both comfort and style during your safari escapade.

What to expect on an African Safari?

Morning Game Drive

Embarking on morning game drives offers a magical encounter with some wildlife waking up for the day and other wildlife still awake after an evening of hunting. The brisk air demands layered clothing for warmth, making a utility jacket and comfortable pants essential. A sun hat with a chin strap becomes your trusted companion, ensuring it stays put during fast-paced drives. The need for sunglasses is paramount as the golden sun bathes the savanna in a warm glow.

Bush Breakfast

At the end of your morning drive, a bush breakfast is your last stop before heading back to camp. As the day warms up, you’ll likely want to take off some layers before you enjoy a hot beverage at the Jeep.

Lunch & High Tea at Camp

As the day progresses, lunch at camp invites comfortable layering tops, allowing you to adapt to the changing temperature. The midday sun may bring warmth, and having the flexibility to adjust your clothing ensures you remain comfortable and stylish throughout your safari experience.

Late Afternoon Game Drive

After lunch, you’ll hop back into the Jeep and head off to see more amazing wildlife. While the weather will still be on the warmer side, be prepared with layers because it will get cold quickly. Vests, warm socks, and boots become indispensable for staying cozy as you continue your exploration of the African wilderness. These items not only provide warmth but also add a touch of safari chic to your ensemble.

Sundowner

The captivating sundowner experience marks the end of your late afternoon game drive. The changing hues of the sky and the cool evening air make vests and warm layers essential. Paired with your comfortable pants and sturdy boots, you’ll be ready to unwind and marvel at the breathtaking African sunset while drinking come coffee, tea, or hot cocoa.

Dinner

After a full day of game drives, you’ll likely have worked up an appetite. Those Jeeps are a workout! Whether you dress elegantly, comfortably, or a mix of both, you’ll likely need to have some layers to deal with the chill in the air.

Baggage Allowance

Before embarking on your safari, be sure to check the luggage requirements of your flights. Smaller regional airlines often enforce strict weight and size restrictions. Opt for versatile, lightweight clothing to maximize your wardrobe without exceeding these limitations.

Top 10 Safari Clothing Must-Haves

Sun Hat with Chin Strap: Stylish and practical, it protects against the African sun. Opt for a wide-brimmed hat for maximum coverage, and add a chin strap because the safaris will use open-sided Jeeps and when you are booking it to see an elusive cheetah or leopard, the wind will take your hat.

Light Scarf/Neck Gaiter & Gloves: Ideal for chilly mornings and adding a touch of flair to your ensemble. For the scarf, choose a breathable fabric that can also shield against dust. For the gloves, make sure they are warm, yet functional, because you will probably want to take photos, video, or use binoculars.

Sunglasses: Shield your eyes from the dazzling sunlight while enjoying the views. Invest in polarized lenses for optimal eye protection.

Utility Jacket: A versatile piece for chilly mornings and breezy evenings. Look for one with multiple pockets for convenience, especially if you’re a photographer. Additionally, you can store your gloves or scarf in the pockets as needed.

Layering Tops: Adapt to temperature changes effortlessly with stylish layers. Opt for moisture-wicking fabrics to stay comfortable. If you layer a tank top with a long sleeve top and a button-up top, with a fleece, all under your jacket, you will be warm enough for any chilly morning or evening higher speed drives in the bush.

Comfortable Pants: You will be sitting for long periods of time. In the early mornings and evenings, you’ll want something warm and comfy. Leggings are also a great addition that can be easier added or removed based on how you’re handling the temperatures. Convertible pants are a great option, especially during the winter.

Shorts: Stay cool during warm afternoons at your accommodation. Opt for looser, longer shorts to protect against insects and sun exposure.

Vests: Essential for layering and keeping warm during evening activities. Select insulated vests for added warmth without bulk to your sleeves. And they just look so cute.

Warm Socks: Ensure your feet stay snug during cooler game drives. Merino wool socks are an excellent choice for both warmth and moisture control. Knee high is also an option that doesn’t add a lot of bulk, but can add some protection from the elements and bugs.

Boots: Sturdy footwear for traversing diverse terrains. Opt for waterproof, ankle-high boots with good traction for maximum support. You’ll just need one pair, so bring a good, versatile pair that will go with everything.

Packing for a safari is an art, where practicality meets style. Embrace the adventure, and with these clothing must-haves, you’ll be ready to explore the wonders of the African wilderness in comfort and fashion.
