Nestled in Murfreesboro, Arkansas, the Crater of Diamonds State Park is the only diamond-producing site in the world that is open to the public. The park spans 37 acres and is situated atop a volcanic crater, creating an intriguing geological setting for diamond enthusiasts. Visitors can explore the park’s picturesque landscape, which holds the promise of discovering genuine diamonds beneath the surface.
Over the years, numerous diamonds of varying sizes and colors have been unearthed by lucky visitors. The park’s unique geology allows for a diverse range of diamonds to be found, including white, brown, and even rare yellow diamonds. Some fortunate individuals have even stumbled upon significant gem-quality diamonds, making the experience all the more thrilling. The largest diamond found at the Crater of Diamonds State Park was the Uncle Sam Diamond, discovered in 1924. The Uncle Sam Diamond weighed an impressive 40.23 carats.
Besides diamonds, visitors to the Crater of Diamonds State Park have the opportunity to find a variety of other minerals and gemstones. Among the gemstones that have been found at the Crater of Diamonds are amethyst, garnet, jasper, peridot, agate, and quartz. While diamonds are undoubtedly the most sought-after treasures, these other minerals and gemstones give you an even greater chance to go home with a pretty amazing souvenir.
Diamond mining at the Crater of Diamonds is a hands-on adventure that requires no specialized equipment or prior experience. Visitors can rent tools such as shovels, buckets, and screens from the park’s Diamond Discovery Center, or you are welcome to bring their own equipment. The process involves searching for diamonds in the plowed fields, washing the dirt and gravel in water, and patiently examining the contents of their screens for that elusive sparkle. It is time consuming and tedious work, but the treasure hunt of it all makes it a lot of fun.

Keep in mind that weather will definitely impact your experience, not just in terms of comfort while searching for diamonds, but also the quality of the last. For instance, we visited during the winter so it was fairly wet and cold. That made the digging somewhat challenging. It also made walking a little tough.
