In 2012, I had the privilege of stumbling upon Jeff Lewis near the port in Nassau, where he was immersed in the creation of his masterpieces. The backdrop of the Straw Market added a dynamic energy to the scene, making it a captivating experience. Despite the hustle and bustle around the port, Jeff’s work area stood as a testament to his dedication to his craft. Painting on unconventional canvases, he transformed found objects into captivating pieces, infusing them with the spirit of the Bahamas. What struck me most was not only Jeff’s incredible talent but also his kindness and humility. Jeff’s talent and kindness extended not only to me but also to my young daughter, leaving an indelible impression on us.

Since that memorable encounter, we have revisited Nassau multiple times, making it a point to stop and talk with Jeff on each occasion. We’ve added new pieces of his artwork to our collection, each piece carrying a unique essence of Bahamian creativity. If we have a choice between cruises, and Nassau is listed as a port of call, that alone becomes a deciding factor for us. Knowing that we will have the opportunity to reconnect with Jeff makes the experience all the more special.

The duration of Jeff’s presence at the Nassau cruise port remains uncertain, primarily because Jeff couldn’t pinpoint the exact start date. However, what is certain is that as long as he continues to paint there, Nassau is all the better for it. Tourists visiting the port are in for a lucky treat, getting to meet and interact with such a talented artist during their travels. Jeff’s art not only enriches the visual landscape of Nassau but also adds a personal touch to the experience of those fortunate enough to encounter his work.
